The Name
Vannro is two Norwegian words held together. It means the stillness that arrives when water stops moving — and takes you with it.
We didn't find a Malayalam word for it. So we borrowed one from a country of fjords, five thousand miles north, that seems to have understood the same thing about living beside water.
Water. The backwater outside your door — brackish, tidal, moving with the moon.
Calm. Not silence, but the absence of urgency. What you feel around 6:40 in the evening here.
A two-room house on stilts, where those two words happen to be the same thing.
The Rooms
Both rooms are private, both have attached bathrooms, and both open onto the elevated deck. The only difference is how much of the water you can see without getting up.
Faces the river head-on. The bed is positioned so the first thing you see is the water, not the ceiling. Ferries pass close enough to hear the engine change gear.
A side angle onto the water and more of the green — coconut palms, the neighbour's boat jetty, the light coming through leaves in the afternoon. Quieter, and slightly cooler.
A Day at Vannro
The backwater goes flat and pale. Fishermen are already out, standing in canoes, throwing nets in a movement they've made ten thousand times. Coffee on the deck; nobody talks much.
Appam and stew, or puttu with kadala — whatever the kitchen made that morning. The Kothad ferry crosses toward Vypin and the water finally starts moving.
Fort Kochi is a short ride away — the Chinese nets, the Jew Town spice lanes, the cafés. Or stay, because the whole point of an elevated deck over a river is that you don't have to be anywhere.
The sun drops behind the palms on the far bank and the whole river turns copper for about eleven minutes. This is the reason the house was built facing this way.
Boat lights, frogs, water against the stilts. It is not silent. It is just that nothing is asking anything of you.
Around Kothad
Chinese fishing nets, colonial streets, the Kashi Art Café, and sunset at the beach promenade.
The Paradesi Synagogue, Dutch Palace, and lanes that smell of cardamom and old paper.
A small country boat through the narrow canals at first light — we'll arrange it with a local boatman.
